This drawing is catalogued with drawbridges in Tokyo and foreign visitors as its subjects, which places the scene in the decades around the Meiji period, when the city was still called Edo until 1868. The attribution to Isoda Koryūsai, an Edo ukiyo-e artist active from about 1764 to 1788, does not square with the 1750 date or the 1850 to 1900 subject range, so the dating is best read as approximate. Whatever its exact moment, the scene reflects the years after Japan reopened its ports to Western traders in the 1850s, when foreign visitors became a familiar presence in the capital. Drawbridges like these controlled passage between the city's districts and the castle grounds, which makes them a useful lens on how daily movement through the city was organized.
