This drawing shows a drawbridge in Tokyo, a subject the catalog connects with foreign visitors to the city between 1850 and 1900, a period when Japan was opening to outside trade and travel after centuries of restriction. The record credits Isoda Koryūsai, an Edo-period artist active from 1764 to 1788, whose work is known for elegant figures and landscapes in the ukiyo-e tradition. The catalog date of 1750 falls before his known working years, so the dating should be treated as approximate. The drawing is part of the David Murray Collection at the Library of Congress.
