A drawbridge in Tokyo and a group of foreign visitors set this drawing apart, and the record places both in the decades after Japan reopened to outside contact in the 1850s. The catalog credits the work to Isoda Koryūsai, an Edo-period artist active from the 1760s to the 1780s, but it also dates the drawing to 1750 and its subjects to 1850–1900, so the timeline is uncertain. Koryūsai is best known for prints and paintings of women and everyday life in Edo, which makes a scene like this worth reading with that gap in mind.
