The record places this drawing at a Tokyo drawbridge with foreign visitors, a scene tied to the years after Japan opened its ports to outside trade in the 1850s. Its dating is uneven: the record gives 1750, yet the artist is listed as active from 1764 to 1788, so the drawing may be later than its date suggests or the attribution may be uncertain. Isoda Koryūsai was an Edo-based ukiyo-e artist known for prints of courtesans, townspeople and daily life. Drawbridges such as those over Edo's canals and moats were familiar city landmarks, and a foreign presence there would have been a new and noticeable sight.
