A drawbridge in Tokyo, with foreign visitors moving through the scene, sets this sheet apart from many Japanese drawings of the period. The catalog dates it to 1750, yet lists the artist as active between 1764 and 1788, and the subject tags point to 1850 to 1900, so the exact date is uncertain. Isoda Koryūsai was an Edo-period ukiyo-e artist known for figure studies and scenes of courtesans and everyday life. The later date range matches Japan's opening to foreign trade in the 1850s, when Tokyo was changing quickly and Western visitors became a new presence in its streets.
