The record names a drawbridge in Tokyo and foreign visitors as its main subjects, which sets this drawing apart from the many street and figure scenes on the board. The catalog dates it to 1750, yet it credits Isoda Koryūsai, who worked in Edo between about 1764 and 1788, and its subject headings point to 1850 to 1900. That gap is worth keeping in mind. Koryūsai was known for ukiyo-e, the woodblock tradition of city life, beautiful women, and everyday scenes. Foreign visitors became a common sight in Japan after the country opened its ports in the 1850s, so a drawing that pairs a bridge with them reflects that later period of change.
