A drawbridge over a Tokyo waterway, with foreign visitors in view, gives this drawing a subject that sets it apart from the courtesan portraits Isoda Koryūsai is best known for. The record credits him, a Japanese artist active from about 1764 to 1788, but dates the sheet to 1750 and tags its subjects to Tokyo between 1850 and 1900. Those dates do not fit together, so researchers should treat them with caution. The later span points to the Meiji era, when Japan opened to Western travelers and Edo became Tokyo, and the scene reflects the bridges that shaped the city during that change.
