A drawbridge and a group of foreign visitors set this drawing apart from the artist's better-known figure prints. The catalog places the scene in Tokyo between 1850 and 1900, a period when the city, called Edo until 1868, opened to Western travelers, and its castle moats and bridges drew sketchers and visitors. The attribution to Isoda Koryūsai, who was active from about 1764 to 1788, does not fit the 1750 date given, so the work's age is uncertain. Its interest lies in how it records an encounter between traditional townscape and newly arrived outsiders.
