Drawbridges over the moats and canals of Tokyo, a city still called Edo for most of its history, are the subject of this sheet, and the record also ties the scene to foreign visitors to the city. The catalog credits Isoda Koryūsai, who worked from about 1764 to 1788 and is best known for prints of beauties, yet it dates the drawing to 1750 and its subjects to 1850 to 1900. Those mismatched dates mean the attribution and period should be read with caution. The later decades were a time when Japan opened to foreign trade and residence, which gives a view of a bridge with outsiders in mind added interest.
