Few drawings in this group bring foreign visitors and a drawbridge into the same scene, and that pairing sets this one apart. The catalog credits it to Isoda Koryūsai, an artist known for ukiyo-e prints and paintings who was active from the 1760s to the 1780s. The recorded date of 1750 and the 1850-1900 Tokyo subject headings do not match that span, so the dating is best read as approximate. Drawbridges were a familiar part of Edo's moats and castle approaches, and Western visitors became a notable presence in Japan after the mid-1850s, which gives the scene its historical interest. The drawing is part of the David Murray Collection at the Library of Congress.
