A drawbridge and foreign visitors form the subject of this drawing, which its catalog places in Tokyo between 1850 and 1900. The record credits it to Isoda Koryūsai, an artist active from about 1764 to 1788, yet gives 1750 as the date, so the dating deserves a second look. Koryūsai was best known for elegant prints of women and urban life in Edo, the city renamed Tokyo in 1868. Drawbridges were a common sight along that city's canals and moats, and images of them show how travelers moved through its streets during the years after Japan's ports opened to foreign trade in the 1850s.
