Drawbridges and foreign visitors in Tokyo are the subjects this drawing is catalogued under, which sets it apart from the figure studies the artist is better known for. The Library of Congress record credits Isoda Koryūsai, who worked in Edo from about 1764 to 1788 on woodblock prints and paintings of courtesans, actors and everyday life. The dates don't agree with each other. The record gives 1750, which predates his known career, while the subject tags describe 1850 to 1900, a later period, so both are worth checking against the catalog.
