A drawbridge and a group of foreign visitors set this drawing apart from the other Japanese prints on the board. The record places the scene in Tokyo between 1850 and 1900, a period when the city, still called Edo until 1868, was opening to Western trade and travel after more than two centuries of tightly restricted contact. The attributed artist, Isoda Koryūsai, worked as an ukiyo-e painter and printmaker from about the 1760s to the 1780s, earlier than the subject dates. The 1750 date and the attribution therefore don't fully agree, so readers should treat them with caution.
