The record places this drawing at a Tokyo drawbridge with foreign visitors in view, a focus that sets it apart from the many street and landscape scenes on this board. It is credited to Isoda Koryūsai, an ukiyo-e artist recorded as active from 1764 to 1788, but the 1750 date and the 1850 to 1900 subject range do not agree, so the period should be read with caution. The later range fits a time when Edo, renamed Tokyo in 1868, was receiving Western traders and travelers after the country opened to foreign trade in the 1850s. The drawing is part of the David Murray Collection at the Library of Congress.
