A drawbridge over a Tokyo waterway, with foreign visitors among the figures, is the subject of this drawing, which the Library of Congress holds as part of the David Murray Collection. The catalog credits it to Isoda Koryūsai, who worked in Edo from 1764 to 1788, but it also dates the piece to 1750, before his known career, so that date should be read as approximate. The subject points to the later 1800s, when Japan had opened its ports to Western trade and foreigners were traveling into the city in greater numbers. The scene is worth a close look for what it shows of a capital in transition.
