A drawbridge and a group of foreign visitors set this drawing apart from more typical views of Japanese city life. The catalog places the scene in Tokyo, which was known as Edo until 1868, and dates the subject to 1850 to 1900, a period when Japan reopened to foreign trade and travelers began arriving in larger numbers. The record credits Isoda Koryūsai, an ukiyo-e artist active from 1764 to 1788, but it also gives 1750 as the date, which predates those working years. The attribution and date should therefore be read with some caution. The drawing is part of the David Murray Collection at the Library of Congress.
