A drawing catalogued as a simple "Japanese drawing," its subject headings point to drawbridges in Tokyo and to foreign visitors there in the second half of the nineteenth century, a period when Japan was opening to outside travelers after more than two centuries of restricted contact. The attribution to Isoda Koryūsai, an Edo-period artist active from the 1760s to the 1780s, does not match those later subject dates, and the 1750 date falls earlier still. Viewers should treat the record's dating as uncertain, and the mismatch is worth noticing when comparing the drawing with documented work from either period.
