Drawbridges and foreign visitors in Tokyo are the subjects catalogued for this drawing, which sets it apart from the courtesans and actors that dominate most Japanese prints of its kind. The record credits Isoda Koryūsai, an ukiyo-e artist active from about 1764 to 1788, but dates the work to 1750 and its subject headings to 1850 to 1900, so the date should be treated as uncertain. The sheet belongs to the David Murray Collection at the Library of Congress and offers a glimpse of how foreigners were depicted in Japan during the years the country began opening to the West.
