This drawing is catalogued under a drawbridge in Tokyo and the presence of foreign visitors, which points to the years after Japan opened its ports to Western trade in the 1850s, when the city was still called Edo until 1868. The record's dates conflict, though. It gives 1750 for the work, while the artist, Isoda Koryūsai, is listed as active from 1764 to 1788, so the subject headings may reflect a later period than the artist's working years. Koryūsai is best known for his ukiyo-e prints of urban life, and drawbridges over the castle moats were familiar sights in Edo.
