The Tsukiji Hotel, shown across these two sheets, was built for foreign guests in the Tsukiji settlement in Tokyo, one of the first hotels in the city designed for Western visitors. The woodcut is signed by Kunishige and was printed in color with the engraving work credited to Matsushima Seikichi, and it may be one panel of a larger triptych. The record dates it to 1850, but the hotel is usually linked to the late 1860s, so that date deserves checking. The scene reflects the opening of Japan to foreign residents and travelers and the new Western-style buildings that came with them.
