Unlike the single sheets that dominate this board, this work is a diptych printed across two sheets, so its composition was meant to be read as one continuous scene. Matsushima Seikichi cut the blocks for this color woodcut, which the record dates to 1750. Its catalog heading, "Ethnic groups," points to a subject of peoples and their customs, a theme that interested Japanese print makers of the period. Woodblock printing was a collaborative trade, with designers, carvers and printers each shaping the final sheet.
