This color woodcut is a two-sheet diptych, so its scene was designed to run across both panels and read as a single composition. The catalog places its subject under ethnic groups in the 1800 to 1850 range, a period when Japanese printmakers often depicted foreign peoples and figures from outside the country's own towns and roads. The record dates the print to 1750, which sits earlier than that subject range and earlier than the full multi-block color printing that ukiyo-e became known for, so the two dates are worth checking against one another. The engraver is listed as Matsushima Seikichi.
