Two sheets joined as a diptych make this color woodcut a single wide scene, and its catalog entry connects it to depictions of ethnic groups. The dates are inconsistent: the record gives 1750, while the subject heading points to 1800 to 1850, a period when Japanese printmakers increasingly portrayed foreigners and people from outlying regions. The engraver credited, Matsushima Seikichi, belongs to the workshop tradition in which carvers turned a designer's drawing into printing blocks. Comparing the two halves shows how color and line carry the figures across the join.
