Commodore Matthew Perry's 1854 meeting with Japanese commissioners at Yokohama is one of the most-reproduced scenes from the opening of Japan to the West. The American expedition had returned in early 1854, seeking a treaty after its earlier visit the previous year, and the talks took place in a pavilion built for the occasion on the shore. Japanese artists made many prints of these encounters, often recording the ships, costumes and ceremony with close attention to detail. Such works were produced for a wide public, and they still offer a useful view of how Japanese observers saw the strangers arriving at their coast.
