Its title names the work at its center: the carrying of goods by Western foreigners in Yokohama's trade. The port had opened to foreign commerce in 1859 under Japan's treaties with the Western powers, and within a few years its waterfront filled with merchant ships, warehouses, and foreign residents who were new to most Japanese viewers. Prints like this one, dated 1861 and issued by the publisher Yamaguchiya Tōbei, belonged to a popular genre of Yokohama pictures that recorded these unfamiliar scenes for a curious public. The ships and cargo handling are worth a close look, since they show how a Japanese woodblock artist of the period pictured foreign activity.
