Three joined sheets show American side-wheel steamers and the piers and wharves beside them, a subject that sets this print apart from the foreign-ship views on the board. Maruya Jinpachi published it in 1861, and the signature names Issen Yoshikazu as the artist. It belongs to a series on the Western world, and it appeared only a few years after Yokohama opened to foreign trade in 1859. For Japanese buyers of the time, prints like this offered a view of unfamiliar ships and machinery. Today it records how Japanese artists first pictured steam power and foreign shipping.
