A camel is the subject of this two-sheet vertical print, which sets it apart from the actor and beauty portraits that filled Edo print shops. The animal reached Edo in 1821 as a gift from the Dutch to the shogun, traveling overland from Nagasaki, and it drew large crowds that prompted printmakers to produce images of it. Musicians appear alongside the camel, and the record lists them as a second subject. The paired sheets show the scale of the color woodblock work, which gives the exotic animal a presence that a single narrow sheet would have struggled to convey.
