Rakuda no zu, whose title means "Picture of a Camel," spreads a camel and a group of musicians across two vertical sheets. Camels were a rare sight in Japan in the 1820s. The animals reached the country through the Dutch trading post at Nagasaki, and public curiosity about them fed a demand for prints like this one. The catalog record pairs the camel with musicians, so the scene may depict a procession or a street exhibition, though the record does not say so directly. The two-sheet format gives the tall animal room to dominate the composition.
