The stage role here is an onnagyōja, a female ascetic, and the record links the figure to a character called Osada no Tarō Nagamune, with the actor named as Kunitake. The image is a three-sheet vertical oban triptych, a format Edo publishers used to show a full-length actor across the width of a single composition. Dated to about 1847 or 1848, late in the Tenpō era, it belongs to the large body of kabuki actor portraits that were sold to theatergoers as souvenirs of current productions. Such prints also reveal how costume, pose, and crest were used to signal a role to audiences of the time.
