Few prints of this period spread a single scene across four sheets, and this one shows the Naruto strait, the churning channel between Awa and Awaji where tides form large whirlpools. The setting belongs to the warrior tales of the Heian-period struggles that kabuki playwrights drew on constantly, with the actor Saitō Kunitake taking the role of Tada no Kurando Yukitsuna and Akugenta Yoshihira's name appearing in the title. Actor prints of the 1840s were sold to theater fans as keepsakes, and their bold color and tall format let the artist fit a whole stage picture into one view. Watch how the waves and tense poses run across the joins between the sheets.
