This print is set at Naruto, the strait known for its violent whirlpools, and it shows the actor Saitō Kunitake in the role of Tada no Kurando Yukitsuna, with Akugenta Yoshihira named alongside him. Its four vertical sheets join into one continuous scene, a format used for dramatic stage pictures in the 1840s. Made in the late 1840s, the print belongs to the Edo-period tradition of kabuki actor portraits, which gave theatergoers and collectors a record of popular performers in their best-known roles.
