This four-sheet vertical print shows a scene titled "Naruto no mae," named for the Naruto Strait, the turbulent tidal channel between Awaji and Shikoku known for its whirlpools. The title places two figures, Tada no Kurando Yukitsuna and Akugenta Yoshihira, in a play drawn from the Genpei-era warrior stories that Edo theater audiences loved. The record dates the print to 1847 or 1848, when actor prints like this one were a staple of the Edo publishing trade. Its tall, multi-panel format lets the artist carry a sweeping seascape across the full width, a composition that was common for dramatic theatrical scenes of the period.
