A three-sheet vertical composition, this woodcut is built around a female ascetic role, identified in its title as an onnagyōja, alongside a character named Osada no Tarō Nagamune. Prints like this were made in the late Edo period, around 1847 or 1848, when publishers produced multi-sheet actor portraits to show kabuki performers in dramatic costume and pose. The wide format let the artist combine the figures into one continuous scene across the sheets. Color woodblock printing of this kind relied on carvers and printers working from a designer's drawing, so the surviving impression reflects the skill of several hands at once.
