Amerikakoku jōkisha ōrai, or "Coming and going of American steamships," is a three-sheet color woodcut that shows the paddle steamers and piers of a Western port. Issen Yoshikazu signed the design, and Maruya Jinpachi published it in 1861 as part of a series called Images of the Western World. Yokohama had opened to foreign trade only two years earlier, in 1859, and local printmakers quickly took up its ships, wharves and foreign residents as new subjects. The triptych shows how Japanese artists pictured Western technology in the years just after the ports opened.
