Its bracketed title, supplied by the Library of Congress, leaves the subject unnamed, so this color woodcut is best approached through its exhibition history. It appeared in *The Floating World of Ukiyo-e: Shadows, Dreams and Substance*, a 2001 Library of Congress exhibition with a catalog published by Harry N. Abrams. Ukiyo-e, the Japanese tradition of woodblock printing that flourished from the seventeenth through nineteenth centuries, portrayed actors, courtesans, landscapes and city life, and its color prints were built by carving a separate block for each hue and pressing them in sequence onto paper.
