Identified in its title as a portrait of the model Tomi, this color woodcut shows a woman after her bath, a theme that recurs in Japanese printmaking of the 1920s. It belongs to the shin hanga, or "new prints," movement, which revived traditional woodblock methods of carved blocks and hand-applied color while adopting softer modeling and more naturalistic detail. Many shin hanga publishers relied on Western buyers, who often prized these prints for blending old craft with a modern sensibility. The 2001 exhibition catalog that lists the work places it within a longer tradition of intimate scenes of daily life.
