Hand-colored photographs of Japanese women in kimono were a popular export and souvenir genre in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when studio portraits were tinted by hand with watercolor or aniline dyes to mimic the color of woodblock prints. Studios in Yokohama and Nagasaki, two ports open to foreign trade, produced many of these images for Western buyers who wanted a keepsake of Japan. The sitter's pose, the layered silk garments, and the painted accents on the robe and obi are typical of the style, so look closely at the fabric patterns and the soft, uneven tinting that reveals the hand behind each print.
