A woman in a patterned kimono holds an open fan, a pose that Japanese printmakers returned to again and again in the woodblock tradition. Prints like this one were usually made for a mass market, sold cheaply in the cities of the Edo period, and they often served as fashion plates, showing the newest textile designs and hairstyles to a public eager to follow them. Because the artists worked from carved blocks, the crisp outlines and flat areas of color are as much a part of the image as the figure. The fan itself, a common accessory of the period, gives the composition a graceful diagonal that draws the eye across the sheet.
