The inscribed title, 真美人, reads roughly as "true beauty," a phrase that announces the print's purpose as much as its subject. It belongs to the bijinga tradition, prints of elegant women in patterned kimono that were popular in Japan from the Edo period into the Meiji era. Such images were often sold as fashion guides and collectibles, and they show how artists recorded hairstyles, textiles, and poses that defined a fashionable look. Notice the careful linework and the way the kimono's pattern is arranged across the figure, since these details were where the printmaker's skill was most visible.
