Few pictures in this group show an elephant, and this cover pairs one with an oval vignette of a woman and a child. Such covers were printed to catch the eye of buyers in bookshops, so the pairing of an exotic animal with an intimate domestic scene was likely meant to attract attention and suggest a range of subjects inside. Japanese illustrators of the Meiji period (1868–1912) often combined older woodblock conventions with Western ideas of portraiture and composition, and oval framing was one of the borrowed forms. Look at how the printed lines and color blocks are layered, since that craft shows how the cover was made.
