A turtle is the particular subject here, drawn as a single animal on a page from a Japanese woodblock book. Turtles carried long-standing associations with longevity and good fortune in Japanese culture, which is why they appear so often in prints and illustrated volumes of the Edo period (1603 to 1868). Woodblock printing made such books affordable enough to circulate widely among townspeople, so pages like this one reached readers far beyond the artists' own circles. Look closely at the line work: carvers cut the outlines and printers then added color in separate passes, and the fine, even contours show how much skill went into each block.
