An aged woman bends forward as she climbs a steep mountain path, with trees crowding the trail and a stream running beside her toward home. The sheet dates to 1811, in the Edo period, when woodblock prints like this were produced in large numbers for popular illustrated books and single sheets. Printmakers usually carved the design into blocks, often of cherrywood, and printed it in black ink. Scenes of rural travel and everyday hardship were a staple of that trade, and the carver used the lines of trees and water to suggest both distance and the effort of the climb.
