Few prints in this group take a religious subject, and this untitled woodcut is part of a series on the Twelve Apostles of Jesus, printed in the shin hanga, or "new prints," style. That movement arose in Japan in the early twentieth century, when artists revived traditional ukiyo-e woodblock methods but turned to modern subjects and a more naturalistic handling of form and light. Dated 1953, this tall black-and-white sheet, about 39 by 16 inches, shows the tradition adapting well beyond the classic era. The Library of Congress included it in its 2001 exhibition *The Floating World of Ukiyo-e*.
