Paddle-wheel steamers dominate this three-sheet woodcut, signed by the artist Issen Yoshikazu, with piers and wharves filling the waterfront behind them. The print comes from a series titled *Images of the western world* and was published in 1861 by Maruya Jinpachi. It reflects the fascination of the years after Yokohama opened to foreign trade in 1859, when Japanese buyers wanted pictures of the Western ships and visitors arriving in the port. Read together, the three sheets form one wide view of the harbor, and the crowded decks and docks show how busy that waterfront had become.
