Few figures in Japanese history carry as much legend as Miyamoto Musashi, the swordsman who lived from about 1584 to 1645 and later wrote the treatise known as the *Book of Five Rings*. Here he appears in a vertical oban woodcut by Utagawa Kuniyoshi, one of a series called *Eimei sanjūrokkassen*, or *Thirty-six Famous Battles*, issued around 1847 to 1850. Kuniyoshi was known for bold, theatrical compositions, and the series drew on episodes from the past, presenting warriors in a dramatic style that appealed to a popular audience in late Edo Japan. Samurai subjects like this one reflected a wider taste for martial stories in the decades before the Meiji Restoration.
