A monkey and a loquat branch share the frame in this vertical print, which the title pairs with a flower vase, or *hanaike*. The loquat, or *biwa*, is a fruit tree whose fruit and leaves were popular subjects in Japanese flower-and-bird prints of the period. This color woodcut dates from roughly 1807 to 1812, late in the Edo period, when artists produced such images for a wide urban market. Its brief, close-up composition reflects the interest in careful observation of animals and plants that shaped the genre, and the print is worth a look for how its color blocks build up texture and tone.
