This sheet shows the kabuki star Ichikawa Danjūrō VIII in a role the title gives as Kaja Yoshitaka, and it dates from 1854, the year the actor died. Vertical full-color woodblock prints like this one, called nishikie, were sold in Edo to theatergoers who collected likenesses of their favorite performers. The record suggests it is probably the top panel of a larger vertical set, so it was likely meant to be viewed alongside companion sheets. As a dated example from the end of the Edo period, it shows how actor portraits were designed and printed in that era.
