This narrow vertical print shows the kabuki actor Ichikawa Monnosuke, whose name places it within the Ichikawa family of actors, one of the most prominent theatrical lineages in Edo. It is a hosoban nishikie, a slim, full-color woodblock format that flourished in the years after multicolor printing became common around 1765. The print is dated to roughly 1772 to 1781, a period when publishers commissioned actor portraits to advertise performances and satisfy theatergoers' appetite for images of favorite players. Look closely at the fine outlines, the layered colors of the costume, and the stylized pose, which together show how these prints turned a stage performance into a lasting, collectible image.
