A figure named Kinko Echizen anchors this sheet, and its subjects are hairdressing and domestic life in Japan around 1700 to 1710. The print belongs to a series titled *Midare fuji* (Scattered Wisteria) and is a sumizurie, printed in black ink alone. Prints of this kind come from the early years of ukiyo-e, when Edo woodblock artists were first turning everyday urban life into popular pictures. Because there is no color, the strength of the image rests on its line and the arrangement of figures, which show how much the form depended on draftsmanship before multicolor printing arrived in the 1760s.
