Here a fierce, bearded Shōki, the legendary scholar who was said to banish demons, shares an umbrella with a courtesan, a pairing that turns the usual image of a hero on its head. The sheet is a narrow hosoban, printed in color with lacquer applied by hand, a technique called urushi-e that gives certain areas a glossy, raised sheen. The print is attributed to Nishimura Shigenobu and published by Urogataya in Edo, probably in the 1720s or 1730s, when such playful mixes of heroic and fashionable subjects were popular with urban buyers. The shared umbrella, a common image of lovers walking together in the rain, adds a light, comic note.
